General Overview: 

As a member of the Board of Directors for The Heron Institute, you will play a crucial role in governing and guiding the strategic direction of our charter school. The Board is responsible for overseeing the school's mission, policies, financial health, and overall performance to ensure that it meets the needs of its students and the community it serves. Candidates must complete the Filing Form to be on the ballot. The filing form can be found here. The candidate filing period will close at 12:00 PM (noon) on Friday, May 2, 2025.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Governance and Oversight:
    1. Participate actively in Board meetings, committee meetings, and other relevant activities.
    2. Uphold the mission and values of the charter school and ensure they are reflected in all decisions.
    3. Review and approve strategic plans, policies, and major decisions affecting the school.
  1. Financial Oversight:
    1. Review and approve the annual budget, financial statements, and financial policies.
    2. Monitor financial performance and ensure financial accountability.
  1. Advocacy and Community Engagement:
    1. Serve as ambassadors for the charter school and advocate for its mission and goals within the community.
    2. Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including parents, students, staff, and community leaders.
  1. Leadership and Support:
    1. Support the school's leadership and provide guidance as needed.
    2. Participate in the evaluation and, if necessary, the selection of the school leader.
  1. Compliance and Legal Oversight:
    1. Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and charter agreements.
    2. Address legal and ethical issues and uphold high governance standards.

General Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission and vision of the charter school.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and make informed decisions in a team environment.
  • Ability to attend at least one in-person board meeting per semester. 
  • Experience in education, governance, finance, law, community relations, or related fields.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Understanding of charter SC school governance or willingness to learn.
  • Current resident of South Carolina
