Role Overview:

Under supervision of Principal (designee or other appropriate administrator), serve as the Elementary teacher, to create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education in accordance with each student’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

 

Role Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include, but not limited to the following)

  • Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, to students in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the school.

  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

  • Uses a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc.

  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.

  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program.

  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping

  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities.

  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with state testing program.

  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.

  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge of:

  • Child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned. 

  • The prescribed curriculum.

  • Current educational research. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. 

  • Learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles. Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents and others. 

  • How to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness. 

  • How to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement. 

  • How to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. 

  • How to work effectively with peers, administrators and others.


TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree of related subject from accredited university. Teacher certification from the South Carolina State Department of Education and current fingerprint clearance card are required. Prior experience is preferred but not necessary for hiring.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment is in school site settings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

MEDICAL BENEFITS:

The Elementary School Teacher shall receive the same health benefits as other full-time certificated employees of the school

PAID TIME OFF (PTO):

The Elementary School Teacher shall be required to follow a (ten) 10-month work schedule.

The Elementary School Teacher shall be granted eight (8) paid time off (PTO) days annually. Calculated and prorated on an annualized basis upon approval by the Board.
